BEIRUT — A retired member of Lebanon's Internal Security Forces killed his ex-wife Tuesday using a hunting rifle in Tripoli, North Lebanon, L'Orient Today's correspondent in the North reported.
The crime took place in broad daylight on a street in the Jabal Mohsen neighborhood, Tripoli, where the man allegedly shot and killed his ex-wife, eyewitnesses from the area who said they knew the suspect told L'Orient Today.
State Security arrested the man and seized his firearm, according to our correspondent.
Video footage sent by our correspondent appears to show the suspect bloodied and surrounded by a crowd during his arrest.
The state-run National News Agency (NNA) also reported the killing.
A spokesperson for the ISF did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In August, Hanaa Khodr, 21, mother of two children and five months pregnant at the time, was beaten and burned alive by her husband.
That same month, another woman from Akkar, Ghinwa Alawi, a mother of three, tried to end her life after years of alleged domestic violence. A few days earlier, her husband had filmed her as he beat her. He then sent the video to his in-laws.
Women’s rights associations have denounced an “unprecedented” degree of violence in these recent incidents.
Activist Alia Awada told L'Orient Today in August that the growing number of femicides and domestic violence cases in Lebanon was a direct consequence of the worsening economic and social situation in the country.
