Trump says Iran can call if it wants to talk, as Iranian envoy returns to Pakistan

President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Iran could call if it wanted to negotiate an end to the war launched by the U.S. and Israel, as Iran's foreign minister returned to Pakistan for talks despite the absence of U.S. counterparts.

Hopes of reviving peace efforts had earlier receded after Trump scrapped a visit to Islamabad by his envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, even as Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi continued to shuttle between mediating countries.

"If they want to talk, they can come to us, or they can call us. You know, there is a telephone. We have nice, secure lines," Trump said in an interview on Fox News' "The Sunday Briefing."

"They know what has to be in the agreement. It's very simple: they cannot have a nuclear weapon, otherwise there's no reason to meet," Trump said.

Hezbollah asserts its right to retaliate to Israel's cease-fire violations

Araghchi expected in Pakistan today

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected again in Islamabad on Sunday, keeping alive hopes of reviving dialogue aimed at ending the Middle East conflict, despite the abrupt cancellation of a planned visit by U.S. envoys.

President Donald Trump left the door open to future talks, saying he had already received improved proposals from Tehran after pulling back at the last minute on sending negotiators to the Pakistani capital.

The first round of Iranian-U.S. contacts took place in Islamabad two weeks ago after a cease-fire came into effect. But efforts to build on those discussions have repeatedly stalled, with both Washington and Tehran maintaining firm positions, raising concerns about renewed escalation in a conflict that has roiled the region and unsettled global markets.

Araghchi’s latest visit followed his arrival on Friday, while the White House had announced that Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner were expected in Pakistan on Saturday. Their trip was ultimately canceled.

Araghchi completed his visit on Saturday, as Trump confirmed the cancellation in a post on Truth Social, saying he would not send envoys on a long flight for talks he argued could be held over the phone.
