On Wednesday, the Constitutional Council struck down the judicial independence law passed last July, sending the legislation back to the drawing board.This assessment is interpreted in two distinct ways. On the one hand, supporters of the invalidation view the decision as an effort to reaffirm the authority of the judiciary, arguing that legislation governing the status and functions of judges cannot enter into force without prior consultation with the Higher Judicial Council.
