Founded in 1982 as a small maternity hospital, Ghandour Hospital grew into one of southern Lebanon’s main civilian medical centers, subject to the upheavals of Lebanon's history.

“Two minutes is all it took to destroy four decades of hard work,” Dr. Ahmad Ghandour, head of Ghandour hospital told us from his home in Arab Salim. For decades, people in Nabatieh Fawqa and surrounding villages frequented this hospital for medical care or emergency treatment. Women gave birth there. Residents of nearby border villages traveled there for treatment. During periods of fighting, families with nowhere else to go sought shelter in its underground floors.The hospital’s destruction on Sunday is the loss of more than a medical institution, the hospital's founder explained.
