Qatar announced Monday the launch of the first phase of an initiative for the "safe and voluntary return" of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, financed with $20 million and expected to allow 100,000 people to resettle in their hometowns in Syria. Presented by Qatar's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mohammad bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi, the project ultimately aims to repatriate 400,000 refugees in successive stages and rebuild their villages destroyed during the conflict, while providing them financial assistance upon return. Many Syrians who sought refuge in Lebanon have returned to their country following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime on Dec. 8, 2024, but many others still hesitate, as they no longer have housing or work in Syria.
