During a visit to the headquarters of the mobile phone company Touch in downtown Beirut, Telecommunications Minister Charles Hage on Wednesday called to “improve the company’s network coverage in light of forecasts for a promising summer season.”

Hage also stated that “transforming Lebanon into a leading regional platform in the field of telecommunications and information technology” is among “the priorities for the next phase” of his ministry. He highlighted that the country “has all the necessary assets to achieve this objective,” adding that the country was in “a strategic geographic position, high-level human skills, a long history in the field of communication, and an open and diverse culture.”

The minister also advocated for a change in “the traditional perception of the telecommunications sector, no longer as a source of revenue for the public treasury but as a main engine of the Lebanese economy,” emphasizing “investment in infrastructure and the creation of a favorable environment for the youth, enabling them to demonstrate creativity in this field.”

“The national responsibility lies with the sector,” notably “to increase state revenues, to ensure the necessary resources for treatments against cancer and incurable diseases, and to ensure the payment of salaries of security forces and public sector employees,” stated Hage. The minister finally stated that “every Lebanese, whether residing in the country or abroad, has the right to quality service,” and stressed the necessity to “work towards network improvement,” recalling that “Lebanese standards have always been, and remain, among the highest.”
