BEIRUT — The suspected murderer of Karim Abou Najm, a Lebanese student at the University of California, who was stabbed to death on April 29 in a park in the city of Davis, California, has been arrested by the police, the university said in a tweet Friday.

The suspect, himself a former student at UC Davis, has been arrested in connection with three stabbings — two of them fatal — that occurred near the campus within a five-day period.

“The person has been identified as Carlos Dominguez. Dominguez was in his third year at UC Davis until April 25, 2023, when he was separated for academic reasons,” the tweet stated.

The university also said that it is “partnering with law enforcement to provide access to any and all information as part of the investigation. We are providing support to any students who may have interacted with him.”

“We urge the community not to rush to conclusions or speculate until all facts are known,” the twitter thread concluded.

The Yolo County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement it has filed two murder charges and one attempted murder charge against Carlos Dominguez, 21. The complaint alleges he “has engaged in violent conduct that indicates a serious danger to society.”

The murder charges include a special allegation that he used a deadly weapon. The suspect could face a life without parole or the death sentence if convicted, due to a separate enhancement alleging he committed multiple murders, the office said in a statement.

In addition to Abou Najm, a member of the Davis community, David Breaux, a man in his 50s, according to US Media, was also stabbed to death.

The suspect's third victim, a woman, was stabbed and left in critical condition.

In 2018, a year before the economic crisis hit Lebanon, Majdi and Nadine Abou Najm left for Davis, California, with their children Karim and Jana.

Both hold academic positions at UC Davis. They had previously worked as professors at the American University of Beirut.

Speaking at the university after the suspect's arrest, Majdi Abou Najm said he regretted not “telling his son how much he loved him” and urged students to “open their phones and tell their parents how much they love them.”
