At the conclusion of parliamentary consultations, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun tasked Nawaf Salam with forming a new government on Monday, Jan. 13, 2025. The presidency confirmed that Nawaf Salam received 84 votes, compared to 9 for outgoing Prime Minister Nagib Mikati and 35 blank votes during the parliamentary consultations. In accordance with the Constitution, the president meets with representatives of all parliamentary blocs as well as independent MPs. In practice, the president always appoints as prime minister the candidate who is supported by the largest number of MPs following these consultations. The former diplomat and judge is currently the president of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
