Director of Sour reserve elected president of prestigious Mediterranean marine reserve network

Ali Badreddine, a researcher and professor of marine biology, has been appointed head of MedPAN, which brings together more than 110 marine reserve managers from 21 countries in the Mediterranean basin.

The MedPAN network of Mediterranean marine reserves, headquartered in Marseille, France, is now presided over by a Lebanese national, Ali Badreddine, director of the Sour marine reserve in southern Lebanon. Holding a doctorate in marine biology and ecology, the professor and university researcher was elected to the position on June 25 for a three-year term, and is the first president from the eastern Mediterranean. Founded in 2008, the organization has around 110 reserve managers from 21 countries. The Sour reserve joined the network in 2012.Contacted for comment, Badreddine expressed his pride at being elected to this position, which "rewards tremendous efforts in the Sour reserve," as well as the importance this represents for the southern coastal city and for Lebanon.
