Arnoun mayor fears Israeli destruction of Beaufort Castle

The mayor of Arnoun, a village in the Nabatieh district situated below the medieval Beaufort Castle, told our correspondent in southern that he was concerned about accusations made the previous day by the Israeli army regarding the existence of a "Hezbollah tunnel" beneath the fortress.

For Fawaz Qatibi, these accusations could constitute a “prelude to serious action” by Israel, namely the bombing or demolition of the site. The Israelis have on several occasions carried out demolitions of entire neighborhoods in southern Lebanon under the false pretext of the presence of tunnels. According to the mayor, the photos published by the Israeli army “were not taken in the Arnoun area.”

In the wake of this, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for two new drone attacks against Israeli soldiers in the vicinity of Beaufort Castle, specifically targeting a “telecommunications vehicle” near the fortress and another used for “ammunition transport” on the outskirts of Yohmor al-Shaqif, another village close to the fort.

Lebanon: ‘No direct contact’ between Trump and Hezbollah, says the party

According to Mahmoud Qomati, the vice-chairman of Hezbollah’s political bureau, Hezbollah has had "no direct contact" with Donald Trump, despite the U.S. president’s claims to the contrary.

“There has been no direct contact between President Trump and Hezbollah officials,” the official said in a written statement in response to a question from AFP.

“We spoke with Hezbollah for the first time,” the U.S. president had told reporters on June 3. Two days earlier, as Israel threatened to strike the southern suburbs of Beirut, he claimed to have had “a conversation with representatives of Hezbollah’s leadership,” who “agreed to stop firing on Israel and its soldiers."

Trump “was perhaps referring to the fact that the adviser to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri is in contact with the U.S. ambassador and passing on messages,” explained the Hezbollah official. The U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, Michel Issa, met on Monday with Nabih Berri, leader of the Amal movement and an ally of Hezbollah, who acts as an intermediary between the U.S. administration and Hezbollah.

“These allegations show just how willing the U.S. administration is to abandon the Lebanese government at the slightest sign of contact with powerful and influential parties in Lebanon,” said Qomati.
