Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has announced he will visit Lebanon next October, according to the National News Agency (NNA). While welcoming the vice president of Lebanon’s Higher Shiite Council, Sheikh Ali al-Khatib, in Baghdad, Zaidi said Monday that “Iraq will continue to assist Lebanon by all means.”
Khatib, who traveled to Tehran before visiting Iraq, is undertaking this tour to advocate for the residents of southern Lebanon, exhausted by two successive Israeli wars. One of them, which began in March 2026 and is still ongoing, has caused unprecedented destruction of dozens of villages and a renewed Israeli occupation of large areas in southern Lebanon.
Khatib gave a detailed account to the Iraqi prime minister about the condition of the people of southern Lebanon, handing him a note with figures on the extent of the destruction, NNA reported.
Iraq was among the countries that supported Lebanon during the latest displacement crisis caused by the war (involving more than a million people), providing fuel to meet the needs of those displaced by Israeli bombings, as well as humanitarian convoys. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam visited Iraq in July to discuss development projects between the two countries.
