During a hearing held Tuesday by the military tribunal presided over by Wassim Fayad, three former army officers summoned as witnesses stated that singer-turned-Salafist Fadl Shaker played no role in the clashes at Abra, near Saida in southern Lebanon. In June 2013, the battle for which Ahmad al-Assir, a sheikh and Salafist preacher, was sentenced to death and is serving a prison sentence, claimed the lives of 18 soldiers and wounded dozens of others.Convicted in absentia in 2020 for supporting Sheikh Assir, Shaker surrendered in October 2025 to army intelligence at the entrance to the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh, near Saida, where he had been living in hiding for 12 years.
