BEIRUT — Progressive Socialist Party MP Hadi Abu al-Hosn had a grenade thrown in his direction as an armed man tried to approach him while he was attending a funeral in Qobbeih, in Mount Lebanon, a source close to the MP told L’Orient-Le Jour on Thursday.
The grenade did not explode, and the assailant fled the scene, the source said.
The PSP press office confirmed the incident in a statement, saying that while "fulfilling a social duty, Abu al-Hosn was the victim of an armed attack ... but he succeeded in overpowering the attacker and neutralizing him before he could carry out his plan. He then continued his social engagement and left the scene calmly once normalcy was restored."
In its statement, the PSP "refers this assassination attempt to the judiciary and the security forces in order to determine the true circumstances."
The party also calls on "the security services to deal firmly with any security breach that threatens civil peace, stressing the need for calm, restraint and patience pending the results of the official investigation."
