The Gaza Health Ministry's daily count suggests the death toll from the war could significantly surpass the 49,000 deaths officially recorded between Oct. 7, 2023, and Jan. 5, 2025, potentially reaching about 75,000 deaths, according to a study published Feb. 18 in the British journal The Lancet. This amounts to a difference of about 35 percent (34.7 percent) higher over the period, to which are added 8,450 "nonviolent deaths" (from disease, preexisting conditions, accidents or other causes not directly related to fighting) and 12,200 missing, for a total of more than 83,000 during the first 15 months of the war.
