Neutrality in the Constitution: What's behind the Kataeb proposal?

“Enshrine neutrality in the Constitution.” This is the slogan the Kataeb party launched on social media following the draft law introduced on Monday by the party’s Leader, Sami Gemayel. The draft aims to include a clause in the preamble of the Constitution establishing the principle of neutrality. The Kataeb party has long championed this slogan which has also been at the center of several political battles led notably by Maronite Patriarch Bechara al-Rai and former President Michel Sleiman (2008–2014).What makes the proposal significant, however, is its timing.
