Cheaper than a motorcycle and faster than a bicycle, electric scooters are becoming an increasingly common sight in Beirut, whether on sidewalks or highways. Priced at a few hundred dollars and capable of reaching average speeds of about 20 kilometers per hour (km/h) — or even up to 100 km/h for more advanced models — this new mode of transportation is already subject to regulations in some European countries. In France, for example, scooters are limited to speeds of 25 km/h and must be equipped with front and rear lights, brakes and a horn. Helmets and insurance are also mandatory. Riders must be at least 14 years old, and scooters are meant to carry only one person, with the use of mobile phones and headphones strictly prohibited.
