Trump thanks Qatar, downplays Iranian response

He also hinted at regime change in Tehran, despite earlier statements by officials that this was not the goal of U.S. intervention.

U.S. involvement risks wider war

The U.S. intervention has sparked fears of an expanding conflict, particularly after a top adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said the U.S. “no longer has a place in the Middle East” and must prepare for “irreparable consequences.”

Ali Akbar Velayati, quoted by state agency IRNA, warned that American bases used to launch attacks on Iranian nuclear sites would be considered “legitimate targets.”
