Syrian security forces shot Friday night from Syrian territory at Hosh al-Sayyed Ali, in northern Bekaa, without causing any injuries. While some reports said a Lebanese soldier was wounded during a patrol in the area, a military source denied these claims to L'Orient-Le-Jour.
Meanwhile, a Lebanese Air Force plane flew over the border area between Lebanon and Syria, and Syrian soldiers were deployed on the other side of the border, according to information from L'Orient-Le Jour's regional correspondent.
After months of tensions between local clans, allegedly close to Hezbollah, and the Syrian authorities, Hosh al-Sayyed Ali regained a level of calm in recent weeks.
The last incident occurred at the end of April, when a nighttime drone attack by Syrian security forces injured at least six people. The Syrian authorities then claimed to have responded to gunfire from Lebanese territory against a backdrop of disputes related to "smuggling activities."
In February and March, sporadic clashes had already occurred between clans and the Syrian authorities. At the end of March, the Lebanese and Syrian defense ministers met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. They agreed to enhance security and military coordination along their common border, which is 330 kilometers long and notoriously porous, and signed an agreement in principle for its demarcation. On April 14, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam traveled to Damascus, where he met Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa to discuss, among other things, border security.
