Dispute in Baalbeck: Kiosk blocks entrance to church
The case, which began in 2022, is straining relations between the convent and the owner of the facility. The Directorate General of Antiquities (DGA) says that it is working towards the expropriation of the land.

In the land near the temples of Baalbeck stands a church attached to the Notre-Dame des Secours Convent, belonging to the Maronite order. Since 2022, this old place of worship has been at the center of a dispute over a kiosk installed at its main entrance, a case that continues to cause turmoil."This kiosk was erected at this location by an individual who purchased this 60-square-meter plot from a Christian resident of the town," Father Charbel Trad, leader of the convent, explained to L’Orient-Le Jour. According to the clergyman, this man uses his kiosk to sell gadgets to the faithful visiting the church, forcing them to pass by his kiosk to reach the sanctuary, as it blocks the main entrance.
