The ecological association Terre-Liban denounced on Wednesday a tree logging operation in the village of Ghodress (Kesrwan), with some of the trees being very old, while road openings were noted to transport the trunks.
This massive logging of trees is apparently occurring on land belonging to a convent.
“The violations continued despite multiple complaints from residents to law enforcement and the Ministry of Agriculture,” Terre-Liban stated in a statement published on social media, backed by photos, highlighting that they had sent a team on-site Tuesday.
Illegal tree logging operations are common in Lebanon, although the law prohibits logging without a permit and imposes penalties on violators. Agriculture Minister Nizar Hani, who took office last February, declared an emergency plan for forests.
