Several people trapped by snow were rescued Thursday night by teams from the Public Works Ministry in the mountainous regions of Akkar, northern Lebanon.
In a statement, the ministry said Friday it conducted "a series of rescue and towing operations during the night in several mountainous areas, particularly in the village of Marjahin on the Hermel-Qammoua road, in the mountains of Akkar, where several citizens trapped by snow were evacuated and transported to Fneidiq."
It also said that its center in Tannourine towed a jeep that had fallen into a ditch on the road leading to the area's cedar reserve. A significant car accident also occurred on the Dahr al-Baidar road, which connects the Bekaa Valley to Beirut, after cars slipped due to the formation of a thick layer of ice. The road was passable again Friday morning.
According to L'Orient Today's correspondent in northern Lebanon, snow covered the mountains of Akkar at an altitude of 700 meters. Most coastal and central areas experienced heavy showers of hail and rain and were affected by strong winds.
According to Khaled Dib, head of the snow removal center in the Jurd al-Qaytaa region, teams from the Public Works Ministry reopened the main roads from Qabaait to Fneidiq, where the snow thickness reached about 30 cm. He also advised drivers not to take mountainous roads located at an altitude of more than 1,200 meters. In coastal areas, where temperatures dropped drastically, reaching below 4 degrees at night, showers damaged agricultural fields.
