In Lebanon, appointments wait for ‘things to mature’
Contacts have been initiated between Joseph Aoun and Nabih Berri, who are reportedly not on the same wavelength regarding the next General Security director.

In its first session after the vote of confidence, the Cabinet session on Thursday under the chairmanship of President Joseph Aoun, did not make the long-awaited appointments to several key positions in the official hierarchy, starting with the new army chief. The thorny issue was not on the agenda of the meeting, to allow time for “things to mature,” said a source close to the prime minister. In other words, the cabinet prefers to wait for political agreement on the issue. Are these appointments expected to be adopted as part of a package deal? Not necessarily, said several ministerial sources, at a time when there is talk behind the political scenes about the possibility that the cabinet fills vacant posts gradually during successive sessions.
