Authorities at Beirut international airport have seized $2.5 million in cash allegedly intended for Hezbollah, three sources told Reuters on Friday. The money was being transported by a man arriving from Turkey.
The agency does not specify how this sum had been carried. One of the sources indicated that it was the first seizure of this kind.
Hezbollah did not immediately comment on the matter. Sources within General Security could not be reached for comment when contacted by L’Orient Today.
Israel has repeatedly accused Hezbollah of using Lebanon's only airport to receive weapons and money from Iran. Beirut announced on Feb. 17 a suspension of flights to and from Iran after refusing to grant landing permits for two Mahan Air flights due to Israeli threats on the airport. These bans led to protests by Hezbollah supporters who blocked the road leading to the airport, near the southern suburbs of the capital.
