BEIRUT — A new challenge has arisen along the winding road toward rehabilitation in Beirut's southern suburbs. There is an estimated two to four million tons of rubble in the diverse and densely populated area, according to a report from the National Council for Scientific Research released late December, and now there's nowhere to put it. Israel bombed the southern suburbs throughout the two-month-long open war against Hezbollah, including two of the largest attacks, which used dozens of 2,000-pound bombs each.The Costa Brava landfill, which stretches along the coast south of Beirut was slated to host the rubble, raising serious concerns about further polluting an already seriously polluted coastline.
