The Lebanese dossier remains a priority for France, even though the United States played a significant role in brokering the cease-fire between Hezbollah and Israel. This is the main message behind the brief visit of Jean-Yves Le Drian, the Elysee’s special envoy for Lebanon, to Beirut on Thursday, the day after the cessation of hostilities. This time, French President Emmanuel Macron did not limit himself to a new mission of mediation by the former foreign minister. He personally inserted himself into the matter to push for respect of the cease-fire agreed upon on Tuesday and for the election of a president to end the political crisis two years after Michel Aoun’s presidential term expired.
