lebanese presidential election

On Jan. 9, 2025, Joseph Aoun, Commander-in-Chief of the Lebanese Army, was elected as the new President of the Republic. Lebanon had been without a president since Oct. 31, 2022, when Michel Aoun's term in office came to an end. Behind this long presidential vacancy was the inability of the various political groupings to agree on a successor. It consequently took 13 electoral sessions before a consensus was reached. The Jan. 9 session took place in a very special context marked by the cease-fire between Lebanon and Israel following a war that decimated the Hezbollah hierarchy, and the fall of the Assad regime.
