The General Security said on Monday that it had received 100,000 Lebanese passports as part of an agreement reached with a contracting company.
"General Security has received a first delivery of 100,000 passports as part of an agreement concluded with a contracting company, which includes the delivery of 460,000 passports," it said in a statement. It also thanked Qatar for funding the project, praising its "unwavering support for the Lebanese people and its institutions."
Demand for passports skyrocketed after Lebanon’s economic crisis began in 2019, creating a shortage of travel documents. An online platform was created to meet the high demand and reported waiting times quickly reached a year or more. Eventually, General Security decided in 2023 to close the platform and return to an appointment-free application system.
