In recent days, developments in the strategic Golan Heights have raised fears that Israel is opening a new front in Syria. According to information reported on Tuesday by security sources quoted by Reuters, Israeli troops have been clearing mines and setting up new fences on the border between the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel in 1967 and annexed in 1981, and the thin strip of demilitarized land bordering Syria. The day before, The New Arab reported that Israel had recently carried out incursions and bulldozed farmland in various parts of the province of Quneitra, located in the demilitarized zone that has been monitored by the United Nations since 1974 (in the aftermath of the Yom Kippur War), on the edge of the Golan Heights.
