A ‘1701 plus’ in the making: Lebanese draft resolution in discussion at Security Council

A draft resolution on Lebanon is currently under discussion at the U.N. Security Council and was expected to be put to a vote by member states on Monday evening (Beirut time). As 10:30 p.m., the session, which was supposed to conclude by 10 p.m. (Beirut time), was still ongoing. According to a leaked document reviewed by L'Orient-Le Jour, the draft text merges elements of Resolutions 1701 and 1559, calls for Hezbollah's disarmament, and invokes Chapter VII of the U.N. Charter to prevent any entity other than the Lebanese state from possessing weapons.
