As daily fighting across the Blue Line continues between Israel and Hamas allies Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad and al-Jama’a al-Islamiya, the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has maintained its presence south of the Litani River. According to its latest report, UNIFIL conducted about 6,000 vehicle patrols from February 21 to June 20 and has successfully exercised its "freedom of movement" despite various clashes with local political parties.
In addition to daily patrols, UNIFIL has been Lebanon's liaison with the Israeli army to manage risks and facilitate 818 events, including farmers' access, funerals, 199 rescue operations with the Lebanese Red Cross and civilian movements. Despite these efforts, two civilians, one of which was medical staff and the other a repairman, were killed by an Israeli strike on Tayr Harfa (Sour district) on May 10. UNIFIL had notified the Israeli army that telecommunications repairs would be taking place, but “no reply was received.”
