Linda Matar, one of Lebanon's original leading feminists, passed away earlier this month after a long life dedicated to the fight for women’s rights in the country.

Born Dec, 27, 1923, Linda Matar shaped the history of feminism in Lebanon and contributed to democratizing and localizing the women's rights movement in the country. Believing that the achievement of gender equality required a shake up of the existing sectarian system, Matar dedicated her life to the fight for equality. At nearly 100 years old, she passed away in Beirut on Feb. 2.Matar spearheaded life changing women’s rights victories throughout her life. These victories included securing the right of women to vote and run for office in 1953, the right to travel without the authorization of a guardian in 1974, and the right to engage in commercial activities in 1994.
