The resignation of Walid Moussallem who was replaced by the composer and opera singer Hiba al-Kawas at the head of the Conservatory has put the spotlight on the many problems facing the national musical institution.

“By launching in 2018 the construction of a new headquarters of the National Conservatory in Dbayeh with rooms and equipment that meet all the requirements of a higher institute of music, I can say that, during my term of office, I was able to achieve a project that I consider of paramount importance for the future of music education in Lebanon,” Walid Mousallem told L’Orient-Le Jour.“The construction (financed by a donation totalling $62 million from the Chinese government) continues despite the crisis.
