On Sept. 22, Jordan’s King Abdullah II delivered a major speech at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, in which he denounced Israel’s actions in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria. His address came as Amman, despite its limited resources, seeks to play a more active role in the region. “The international community must not assume that Israel’s ambitions stop at Palestine (...) it possesses an expansionist appetite that makes it a regional threat," he said, calling for "international sanctions, asset freezes, embargoes and diplomatic isolation" on Israel.Since the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, Israel has expanded its hold in southern Syria, moving closer to Jordan’s northern border. It has also expanded settlements in the occupied West Bank, not far from Jordan’s western border....
