Believing that its views have been ignored, BDL decides to boycott talks with IMF
A parliamentary subcommittee will review the amendments to the banking resolution draft law on Wednesday, while government representatives continue discussions with the IMF on the text concerning the return of deposits.
A new point of tension is complicating negotiations between Lebanon and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). As two crucial meetings take place on Wednesday to discuss the laws intended to address the banking crisis, Banque du Liban (BDL, central bank) decided to suspend its participation in talks on the draft law for financial recovery and deposit restitution, as well as other related reforms.Notified in a letter sent a few days ago to the Finance Ministry, the decision came as an ad hoc parliamentary subcommittee reviews the amendments introduced by cabinet and the IMF to the banking resolution draft law.At the same time, government representatives are continuing discussions by videoconference with IMF experts on the changes requested by the IMF to the financial recovery and deposit restitution draft law.
