BEIRUT — Hezbollah MP Ali Fayad said Sunday that the lack of concrete results from talks between Lebanon and Israel in Washington reflects “the failure of betting on the option of direct talks with the enemy,” arguing that their continuation indirectly covers Israeli attacks in south Lebanon that are expanding day by day.

“The unfruitful results of the meetings at the Pentagon, in which the political authority involved the Lebanese Army, confirm the failure of betting on the option of direct negotiations with the enemy to achieve any of the Lebanese demands, starting with a total and complete cease-fire,” the lawmaker said during a commemorative ceremony organized by Hezbollah in the village of Houla.

“The continuation of these negotiations, under the shadow of the campaign of destruction in the South and the horrific massacres of civilians, even serves as indirect cover for Israeli practices,” he insisted.

“The option of concessions and submission has failed, and the authorities must change strategy by moving toward another path based on uniting the Lebanese around a national, unifying choice in the face of Israeli brutality, which no longer threatens only the South's geography and Shiite demographics, but the Lebanese entity as a whole,” the MP continued, according to the state-run National News Agency (NNA).

Military-level Lebanese-Israeli negotiations, launched several weeks ago after the resumption of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah on March 2, were held on Friday at the Pentagon under American sponsorship but did not yield any progress.
