On April 30, residents from villages surrounding the Srar landfill in Akkar staged a sit-in, blocking the site's entrance and stopping trucks coming from other regions, to protest the nuisances caused by the landfill: foul odors, pollution, and disease. Yet, this landfill has existed for 33 years. So, what has changed?According to consistent sources, the Srar landfill, which was supposed to serve Akkar exclusively, was spontaneously expanded in 2024 following a dispute between brothers who own the land. One of them opened a new site, with local partners, on another plot.
