‘In Markaba, we were living in paradise … we only knew it when we lost it’

Located a kilometer and a half from the Israeli border, Markaba witnessed every war. One can say, it has gone through hell. And yet, for one of its residents, Markaba was a paradise.

Around March 20, the Israeli invading troops advanced in a new axis in the village of Markaba, in the eastern sector, pushing into southern Lebanon along the border zone where it has been ordered to systematically destroy homes. Since then, Markaba can be regarded as under Israeli occupation, as Hezbollah fighters withdrew from the town. Still, the party's fighters continued to claim occasional strikes against Israeli soldiers, occupying a position in the village since the November 2024 cease-fire.This is not the first war Markaba has endured. Pressed against the Israeli border in the Marjayoun district, it has experienced every major conflict.
