Historically, Lebanon has been in a constant struggle over its identity and orientation. Since the establishment of Greater Lebanon and the divide over Arab or Western alignment, to the rift between the Baghdad Pact and Arab nationalist project; from support for the Palestinian cause and armed struggle to rejection; from the shift toward the May 17 Agreement and its overturning; from the call for Syrian tutelage to its rejection; and, in recent years, the open debate over whether to turn East or West.
