Last week, Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) leader Gebran Bassil held a “positive” meeting with Saudi Envoy Yazid bin Farhan. Then, he took a public stance against Hezbollah. On Tuesday, he stated that the 2006 Memorandum of Understanding, which sealed a historic alliance between the FPM and Hezbollah, had “fallen apart.”Such a statement is hardly surprising in the wake of Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem’s speech on Monday, in which he suggested that his party could take part in a conflict involving its Iranian patron in the event of a U.S. strike.In fact, after Hezbollah opened a support front for Hamas in October 2023, relations between the FPM and the party began to deteriorate.However, just a few hours later, Bassil shifted his tone in a speech to Parliament during the 2026 budget debate.
