Nizamettin Kabaiş collapsed when he found his daughter's body at the morgue, 18 days after she disappeared from the university campus in Van, southeastern Turkey. There were deep wounds on Rojin's ankles and bruising across her skin. The 21-year-old body was found on Oct. 15, 2024, on the shores of Lake Van and the event sent shockwaves all the way to Diyarbakir, the Kabaiş family’s hometown. Photos taken before her death show a smiling young woman. Rojin Kabaiş was excited to start a course that would set her on a path toward becoming a teacher.
