Lebanon demands $1 billion from illegal stone quarries

Leaked Finance Ministry documents show it received two letters last week from the Environment Ministry listing 427 recovery orders tied to illegal stone quarrying.The Environment Ministry states that additional waves of recovery orders will follow.The estimated amount of this first round is nearly one billion dollars. In June 2023, under Nasser Yassine's mandate, the ministry had assessed the amounts owed to the state by the quarry, sand, and gravel sector for the period 2007–2018 at between 2.4 billion and 3.7 billion dollars.These amounts include unpaid fees and taxes, the cost of environmental damage, and the expense of restoring damaged sites.
