BEIRUT — In 2020, after more than eight years working as a domestic worker in Lebanon, Ethiopian national Meseret Hailu, now in her 40s, filed a complaint against her former employer for “slavery” and against a recruitment agency for “trafficking slaves.”On Tuesday, May 27, 2025, she testified for the first time at the Baabda Palace of Justice, appearing before Mount Lebanon Investigating Judge Rania Yahfouf. According to a source familiar with the matter, Meseret spent nearly two hours confronting her former employer and sponsor, M.S., who is in their 50s.Speaking in Amharic, Meseret was assisted by a translator from the Ethiopian Embassy. She was also accompanied by her lawyers, Hady Nakhoul and Georges Tahan, who represent the Geneva-based NGO Legal Action Worldwide (LAW).
