Lists backed by Ashraf Rifi and the Najib Mikati-Ihab Matar alliance split the municipal council seats almost evenly — a far cry from the 2016 scenario.

Three days later, the suspense came to an end. On Wednesday evening, the results of the municipal elections in Tripoli, held on Sunday, were announced. Among the six lists competing for the city’s 24 municipal council seats, only three succeeded in getting candidates elected: “Tripoli’s Vision,” backed by MP Ashraf Rifi, and former Syria-aligned MPs Faisal Karami and Taha Naji, won 12 seats, compared to 11 for the list supported by MP and businessman Ihab Matar, and, in all likelihood, by former Prime Minister Najib Mikati. The remaining seat went to Ibrahim Obeid, a civil society candidate from the “Guardians of the City” list.Roughly speaking, Sunday’s vote produced a configuration that is the exact opposite of the outgoing municipal council.
