Fattoush Index shows cost of food increased dramatically during this year's Ramadan

In Feburary, a fattoush salad cost an average of LL53,773 to prepare, but during the first week of Ramadan, it cost LL62,623, an increase of 16.5 percent.

On the eve of Eid al-Fitr celebrations marking the end of Ramadan, the Ministry of Economy and Trade (MoET) published its fourth "Fattoush Index" of this month, a record of costs released weekly during Ramadan since 2012 with the aim of providing an idea of how basic food costs fluctuate during times of higher demand.The price of fattoush is an intuitive way to track food prices, given its 14 diverse ingredients including vegetables, spices, olive oil, and bread; it is also “the main dish of Ramadan,” in the MoET’s words.The Fattoush Index measures the production cost of a 360-gram bowl of fattoush, one of Lebanon's favorite salads and a stable in the Lebanese diet, through the changes in cost, before and during Ramadan of its ingredients: garlic, lemon, cucumbers, olive oil, lettuce, mint, onion, bread, parsley, purslane,...
