The escalation of violence along Lebanon's northeastern border with Syria on Sunday further complicated the security situation in Lebanon. At least seven soldiers from the new Syrian army were killed in cross-border clashes following the abduction of three of their comrades by armed men from clans reputedly close to Hezbollah. Members from the clan claimed they responded to the Syrian army allegedly crossing the porous and ill-defined border, a claim Damascus has categorically denied.Although Lebanese and Syrian defense ministers agreed to a cease-fire late Monday evening, this development is particularly dangerous as it risks creating tensions between the two countries.
