A branch of the al-Kabir River separates Rana and her three children from Lebanon. In a matter of minutes, her family — like dozens of others — crosses the water, escaping Syria four days after massacres erupted on March 6 in the country's west, particularly in the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartous, home predominantly to Alawites.Men, Lebanese and Syrian alike, plunge into the river to help.
