The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Armed Forces and Veterans published a joint press release on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2024.

This recalls that the cease-fire agreement signed on Nov. 26 between Israel and Lebanon, which came into force on Nov. 27, provides for a cease-fire supervision mechanism chaired by the United States. In this context, the French foreign ministry took the opportunity to call on "all parties to respect it, over time, and to put an end to any action that threatens it."

Within this cease-fire supervision mechanism, France will be represented by Brigadier General Guillaume Ponchin, supported by around 10 military and civilian personnel from the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Armed Forces.

In conjunction with the Lebanese army, the Israeli army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the statement said that "the supervision mechanism will monitor the implementation of the cease-fire between Israel and Lebanon. It will also work with the technical military committee to support Lebanon to contribute to the re-energization of the Lebanese armed forces and their deployment in southern Lebanon, for which France reaffirms its support, as part of the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701."
