Lebanon's fight at UNESCO to ‘ensure effective and comprehensive protection of cultural property’

On the eve of a UNESCO session called by Lebanon’s delegation to enhance protection for threatened archaeological sites, Ambassador Mustapha Adib detailed the efforts undertaken to protect cultural heritage, education and journalism.

What were the first measures taken by Lebanon's permanent delegation to UNESCO, under your leadership, following the first Israeli bombings?On Oct. 21, Lebanon submitted a draft resolution to UNESCO’s Executive Board, which was unanimously adopted. The resolution seeks support in three key areas: Protecting journalists, strengthening education and preserving archaeological sites, including UNESCO World Heritage sites. As part of the resolution, a special fund was established to enable states to assist Lebanon in these three sectors.In parallel, we have convened an extraordinary session of the committee responsible for protecting cultural property in armed conflicts, scheduled for Nov. 18 at UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
