BEIRUT — The usually bustling Shatila Palestinian refugee camp fell eerily silent on Wednesday, following the Israeli assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political bureau, at his residence in Iran.Haniyeh, 62, had served as the head of Hamas's political bureau since 2017. During Israel's war against Gaza, which began on Oct. 7 and resulted in the killing of over 39,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians — Haniyeh was a central figure in the negotiations aimed at achieving a cease-fire and a hostage exchange deal between Hamas and Israel.
