BEIRUT — Lebanon's Parliament speaker, Nabih Berri, congratulated Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Saturday on his country's newly elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian, the Lebanese state-run National News Agency reported.

Reformist candidate Pezeshkian emerged victorious in Iran's presidential election, defeating his hardline opponent, according to the country's electoral authorities. According to Reuters, Pezeshkian carries the hopes of millions of Iranians seeking less restrictions on social freedoms and a more pragmatic foreign policy.

"On the occasion of the Iranian people’s successful completion of the presidential elections and the noble, democratic manner in which they were held, I extend to your eminence my warmest congratulations and sincere wishes," Berri said in a letter sent to Khamenei.

In a separate letter sent to Iran's newly elected president, Berri said, "On behalf of the Lebanese people and their Parliament … I am pleased to congratulate you on the trust that the Iranian people have placed in you by choosing you for the position of president of the Islamic Republic of Iran."
